22 March - World Water Day
The purpose of events dedicated to this date is to draw attention to the problems of drinking water quality, the need to protect water resources and their rational use.
The shortage of drinking water is connected with the results of climate change, with human activities that lead to the reduction of water resources due to the pollution of freshwater ecosystems, as well as with the consequences of urbanization and changes in land use.
According to statistics, almost 1/5 of the world's population lives in areas where there is a serious shortage of clean drinking water.
The UN recognizes water scarcity as the #1 problem in the world. By 2025, 3.2 billion inhabitants of the planet will suffer from a lack of fresh water.
The world uses 10 billion tons of water every day. 80% of the used water in the world is returned to the environment as untreated water.
1.8 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water.
In Ukraine, we tend to think that the lack of drinking water is a problem of other, distant countries. But it is not so.
It is enough to look at the world map developed by WWF experts on the Water Risk Filter online resource, which shows the risks associated with fresh water.

Compared to central or northern Europe, part of the territory of Ukraine has an intense color — this indicates an increased risk of various problems related to the lack of fresh water. That is why it is extremely important for companies and ordinary citizens to carefully monitor its use every day.
The amount of water used to produce a product is called the product's Water Footprint. We can also calculate the Water Footprint of countries, companies and individuals. The average statistical water footprint around the world is 1240 m3 per person per year.
How to improve the situation?
• Use less water in everyday life and reduce your Water Footprint by buying fewer products.
• Check the faucets in your home regularly. One leaking faucet results in a loss of 75 liters of water per day. In total, this is 2,250 liters per month, or 20 baths.
• Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. In this way, you can save 6-14 liters per day. The same applies to taking a shower - when you lather up, you can close the tap.
• Take a shower instead of a bath. A quick shower uses significantly less water than a bath.
• Eat less meat. The production of 1 kg of beef requires 15,000 liters of water. A kilo of chicken requires 3,900 liters.
• Use safe detergents. Phosphate detergents cause the water to bloom in our reservoirs, which leads to the death of aquatic vegetation and animals.
• Do not use the toilet as a garbage can. Each flush of water in the toilet consumes 3-6 liters. water Remains of food, cosmetics and other household waste should be thrown into the garbage can.
• Don't buy too much. A significant amount of water is spent on the production of each product. The same applies to food products - do not buy too much and try to finish the food on your plate.
• Collect rainwater to use for watering the garden and vegetable garden.
• Do not throw garbage into a river or lake.
